PEACE IS THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE

Revolve for peace. What an idea? Where does something like that come from? How can it even be discussed by a girl that has never experienced a space of war? Who and what does this little human from down under know, coming from a place where food is ample, the sun shines, death is not on my front door and I get to revolve these little peddles to the pavement and experience worlds that I had only ever imagined or seen on a television screen? What makes this idea worth anything?

We have taken these wheels of revolution over cobble stone streets and past castles, where aged steeples open up to the empty skies, like candles on a birthday cake. We have cycled through deep valleys of the Appeninos and the Pyreneese. We have watched cliff faces plummet into seas and seen sand morph from rocks to beaches. There have been nine countries of exploration, where saints are now cities and artists of our past have left their mark with a statue, picture or a building. We have danced with strangers of many languages, moving our bodies, hands and eyebrows (in ways that a contortionist would be proud of) just to be understood. We have seen skies that reflect the pastels on the buildings, like a candy jar not only too tempting to a child, and with each of these moments I have been swallowed up by the flavours of scenes, people and tastes that have had the power to consume me.

So what does war have to do with with all of these things I have listed above? Absolutely nothing to do with it, but peace has everything. This perception of peace will always occur when we open up to the elements of ourselves that we can sometimes find confronting and treat our perceptions of 'not good enough' with acceptance. This occurs when we smile at the silly things we have done that we are ashamed of, and nurture ourselves with love and compassion. The availability to do the same with every circumstance, including those which may not be conventionally tagged as peaceful. Our internal is the dance we have with our external and there is the freedom, peace and harmony in the world that we as individuals can create.

With the intention of sharing the power of peace, I am limited only by the words that bound them. With every peddle of revolution in this evolution of my time, I am exposed to the heart that goes beyond any of those words. You see, I have the privilege to be surrounded by individuals that inspire me. We could assume that with my adoration of super heroes, there might be the need for qualities that we believe to be only for sci fi, myths or fables. However, the beauty of our true essence doesn't need to fly, climb mountains, build castles or even live in one. Our superhuman qualities and essence comes in far simpler ways. It is the fathers giving of his life to better his child, a brothers soft words of assurance that 'all is ok,' or a 90 year old, who shares his wisdom of love. It is shown in Jessica's divine diaries, my sons songs or a dinner created by my mother. These superheroes of life show humanity enacting their true nature, in all colour, form and vibrancy, wrapped up in a package of story, music, compassion, gestures and words.

Whether it be the curiosity, strength or courage shown to me by beautiful Jessica, the smile from a stranger or the flower that searches it's way to the sun, I can only breath deeply in awe of the awe makers that surround me, in all it's simplicity and beauty. I breath deeply, in the peace that exists in me, in every moment and know with all that I am, that this not unique to me, it is present and alive in all of us. I breath deeply at the knowing that all that I am is not separate to anything that I see. I take a deep breath in being responsible for the ability I have in responding with peace. This has exposed the power of such an experience, to be free of the prison that can exist without being in one, the war within, without lifting a gun, or the fight of the self that limits our very experience of the world we live and breath.

It has been a powerful learning and awareness for myself: that when I take responsibility for my own peace, I then have the ability to respond with peace. This is humanity without the insanity. It's where ultimate freedom, flow and force are exposed to show our true nature of love, beauty and creativity. Peace is the power of the people. It doesn't have to wait for a government, institution or corporation to make happen. It's ours to own. So with every peddle our little legs pumped over mountains with our bikes, Phantom and Possible, we share a voice of full expression, the possibility of all of us being aware of what already exists and seeing peace as our power in this lifetime. A voice of humanity without the insanity, dancing to the beat of all hearts in one heart. 'Peace is power' and 'love this life' are not just slogans worn on our shirts, they are embodied by the two wearing them. To evolve our bodies, minds and hearts to such awareness is our personal freedom and isn't just a utopian fantasy. It's a tangible reality for all of humanity to experience.

Now that's an idea worth everything and most definitely worth sharing. 'Peace is our power'.

So what is our ego? Is it the bloated chest body builder walking along the beach? Is it the big noter at a party? Is it the reason we don’t sing in public or even the one that says no to learning how to draw? The ego is our mind made sense of self, it’s the identity we have around our thoughts, beliefs and it is what holds on to us which quite often imprisons us. Everything that is attached to the ‘I’, is the ego attaching. Even a person who says no to speaking in public, but really wants to or the one that looks for approval by others is allowing the ego to be larger than they are.

However we perceive ourselves, whether it is the 'I' who can remember facts, a lousy dancer, good at our job, a happy family man, a positive person, the optimist, a stress head, good looking or ugly, is the ego holding on to who it thinks it is. Our egoic self, is our mind to body conditionings, beliefs, structures, systems and impressions of the form that is presented in our daily life. Our ego loves what it knows, it loves to be fed with the image of entity based concepts and will do what it takes to hold on to them.

As we peel through the layers of who we think we are, let go of expectations, regrets, beliefs, guilts and practice living in this moment. We are exposed to the essence of all that we are, this is where the ego loses its power and our authentic self is exposed. As each layer falls, so does a part of the ego and with each layer falling, a lighter experience of life is the new reality.

When we walk in this life with the lighter experience, our connection to all existence is more obvious. We are able to be in more of a flow with all that exists and life runs through us, rather than us through it. This essence of existence is our ultimate truth, the formless - this is beyond those frames and concepts we perceive with our minds.

There are practices, concepts and habits, which can encourage such awareness of connection; they can take time, patience and curiosity. But the fact that you are reading this is the curiosity that is already ignited. You see, to remember who we are is just that, a remembering and it’s igniting the inner knowing of our absolute truth that brings you to this blog. To use tools, concepts and strategies are fabulous ways to unfold to ourselves. To learn the ones that resonate with you are for your own exploration, experience and personal evolution. Valuing the existence of form without attachment to that form, is the deepening of awareness and freedom in the existence of the life presented.

Do we have to become the yogi who lives a life of stillness in the Nepalese mountains? We can if we choose, however, we have the gift of being human and get to choose to live in this day, with all of the tools and experiences available in this time. This is BEING in this life completely, however the individual sees fit. It’s where careers, Facebook, cars, family commitments, electronics are present. It’s where technology, science and innovation expose deeper truths of our interwoven threads of reality. It’s about moving with the changes and being present enough to make conscious choices that serve our life experience rather than contract them. Being in this moment is where we integrate fully the form with the formless. We have come to a state of consciousness where we are opening up to our truth, seeing beyond the matter and being present to the bigger reality. This is an exciting time of humanity, it opens us up to create systems and structures based around the absolute truth of unity, rather than ones of separateness.

We don’t have to be a particular person, good grades, spunky looks, activist, degrees, smart, rich, not even what society would perceive as kind. To connect with the essence of existence is Being in this existence completely. How we do that, is up to each individual. There are many paths to this place, some are quicker than others and as history has exposed, no two paths the same. We have the gift of the human experience to bring choice to our curiosity and feed systems that expand our life experience, rather than react in the systems that contract them.

To be curious to the unfolding of the self is where a subjective experience can unfold to the universe in all its mystery, magic and creativity. Beyond ego is beyond mind, there is a dance worth remembering.

Silence is the sound when abuse is mentioned. Whether it is sexual, child, self, physical or emotional, it seems to masked with a stop of conversation, a shake of the head or a fire of anger that transforms to the aftermath of silence.

Enough is Enough

With the enquiry into the hundreds of institutions, conviction of Daniel Morcombe’s killer, together with the dribbles in the papers of personal stories, awareness into the community of the extent of abuse is slowly being exposed. We find ourselves in an overwhelming state of shock, as to how common and hidden such abuse has been and still is. One in three suffer some form of abuse in a lifetime and one in five experience sexual abuse. A friend of mine said ‘no way, that can’t be true’. I couldn’t help but understand his disbelief. Of course, someone who had never personally been affected would have no idea. Why would he? The silence is everywhere.

Enough is Enough

Whether we have personally been exposed to such violation or not, the reality is, it effects every single one of us. Victims of abuse are mothers, fathers, sons, daughter’s sisters and brothers. It is not unique to any race, creed, age, socio demographic, religion or gender. The ripple effect of subjective experience moves to a global tsunami of destruction. This is a universal issue of oppression and the suppressed, silenced and shamed individuals have effect on every being on this planet.

Enough is Enough

The reaction we have seen in institutions of denial, fear and ignorance, are not unique to the institutions. My parents love me and that was their response, silence. Over the years, I have heard many report just the same. These reactions are human beings operating under their very primitive brains. To react in fear is where our behaviors are limited, we don’t need to be too awake to see the result of limited minds in action.

Enough is Enough

As United Nations are exposed to the devastating figures of abuse, we as individuals can no longer ignore the chaos. I welcome the eruption of exposure of such violation, turmoil and pains, because in the worst times in history, it’s when humanity shows their innate self and opens their hearts of compassion and understanding. Let’s unite as individuals, move beyond our religions, race, creed, socio status, sexuality, gender and voice ‘enough is enough’ for the individuals that still sit in fear, to be able do so themselves.

What is it about being creative that we believe we are or we aren’t? How many of us have already by the age of 20 decided that we haven’t a creative bone in our bodies. Well peeps - great news, creativity is the gift we can all express in different forms and is something each and every one of us have, as our innate nature. So even if we draw like a four year old or our writing resembles the ability of someone who is seven, there is no excuse for that excuse that keeps us stuck in those places. Developing our awareness of our innate self can have positive effect on our relationships, work and personal clarity.

Creativity isn’t exclusive to people like Picasso, Hemingway, Beethoven or Donatello. Just being human gives us the ability. Using practices like writing, doodling, painting as a tool to evolve this brain of ours, lies in the power of us as individuals. Simple activities have the power to wash away the clutter of our minds to expose clarity in making decisions. Simple practices brought into our daily life, give us the possibility to be innovative and creative in our work environment. Simply taking the time to create something, even if our attempt of a portrait of our child resembles the family pet, supports expanded awareness of our true nature.

Do our creations have to look good? Not going by the hundreds of strokes that I have put to canvas, where the intention for blue became grey.

Do they have to be practical? Lets hope not, the chair I created looked more like a torture chamber for people no taller than 50cm.

Do our creative productions have to be worth millions to be seen as something that is worth doing? The worth of this exploration goes beyond money.

Although these expectations are the very reasons we don’t jump into our creative selves, it’s time to open up and let these outdated beliefs be crushed by the knowing, that there are so many rewards that can be experienced, just by giving it a go. When we choose to use tools to evolve this brain of ours, our minds then become open to possibility with creative solution in the practical world we call – ‘life.’

“You see things and say Why? But I dream things that never were and say ‘Why not?” – George Bernard Shaw

I cannot put in words the personal growth and expanded awareness that took place in my decision to write fluff. Half the time it didn’t even make sense and often, more times than not, that sense was only sense to me. Whether I am writing, painting, drawing I now know they are moments in time which have powerful effect on my daily life – I just love making the choices that serve me now.

Benefits of bringing a practice of drawing, painting, or journal writing into our daily life:

Expression

Clear the mind for clarity

Releasing internal emotional contractions, which make us more reactive in life. This opens us up to responsive behaviors that serve our life experience.

Develops personal skill sets.

Opens us up to spontaneity.

Develops curiosity in other facets of life.

Stimulates our compassion and connection to others.

Slows down our internal chatter, which causes stress related illness or reactions.

Relieves anxiety.

Washes away unexpressed pains, frustrations and regrets. Whether they are inherited, experienced or perceived.

Relieves tension.

Whether we sit down and doodle, come up with ideas how to make a more exciting dinner or pick up a pen to write a journal, these are all moments in time where we are firing up the front lobe and stimulating our evolved human brain for expanded personal awareness. Letting go of the idea that ‘we can’t,’ might just expose the Picasso in ourselves.

Practices for exploration:

Take a pencil and paper and draw the tree outside (it doesn’t even matter if it doesn’t look remotely the same!)

Take time to write a journal when you first wake up in the morning. This practice can often take away the internal fog. What you write doesn’t even need to make sense.

Get some color pencils and just do shapes.

Doodle on a notepad.

Go to drawing classes.

Life moves in mysterious ways and can present us as individuals with personal experiences that sometimes question what on earth is this life all about anyway? Why is it children can be exposed to such awful experiences, families be fighting, adults acting like kids and murder, war and greed are part of what we call life? Why is it hate, poverty, separation, depression and loneliness can be experienced by so many individuals, when the world has never been so populated? Aren’t we supposed to of become more intelligent? Well going by the cycle of destructive behaviors, whether it be with the self or the planet, we as a collective, seem to be stuck in patterns that aren’t serving humanity.

Well it’s time to jump into the space of possibility, potential and peace with the tool of this fabulous evolved human brain. You see, the modalities of repeated behaviors, which don’t serve our life experience, are just individuals operating under our old system of our mind. Reactive fight, flight or freeze response and dictated by our emotions. This outdated system served us at one point of evolution, but now we have the magic of the evolved human brain where, ‘choice’ over our reactions can be experienced to expose personal power.

There are many reasons we behave like we do and if we want reasons - why we should be angry, sad, jealous, irritated, frustrated, we will find proof everywhere. But the sooner we open up to being, where constant expansion can be experienced, the quicker we can question our reactive spaces of human conditioning, which contract our life experience. You see, our conditioning, beliefs and perceptions are so ingrained, that we find it hard to see beyond what we already know, which in turn creates what we have seen, over and over. So the stuck spaces of our personal repetitive behaviors, are just the same as the stuck spaces you see governments, religions, businesses, etc. So are we doomed to continue the patterns of our past?

Great news guys, no we are not’. Yay, yay, yay. So there is hope for the addicted, depressed, abused, suppressed, anxious and anyone who just wants to live a life of fulfillment. There is hope for countries, governments, religions, races, communities, families to live also in the space of potential with peace passion and purpose. As each of us take responsibility as individuals to internal freedom, the ripple effect of that, will no doubt be reflected in the world, each of us experience. Operating in the new space of the evolved brain is creating new systems for the self, which serves not only the individual, but humanity as a whole.

Being curious to be curious about who we are, is when life can really start show a different reality beyond the one we are seeing. With the fabulous tools of technology we can have information at the click of a button. We don’t have to be scientists to have this information, we now have Google and You tube.

Be curious to be curious – some suggestions for surfing the net

Looking at research in neuroscience, plasticity of the brain. Neural pathways.

Sensory body awareness.

Practicing presence - mindfulness.

Understanding the adrenal system and what play it has with wellbeing.

Learning what emotions are and using them to serve our life experience rather than reacting, which contract it.

Meditation – use it as a tool to develop our awareness.

Unfolding to the self, allows those reasons for reactive states of contraction to wash away. When we start to question our reactive states, like thoughts, emotions, beliefs etc, we can start to see beyond them. Our reactive states are conditionings, they are not who we are, but patterns of biochemical reactions.. Opening up to all of the self isn’t about changing the mind - it’s opening it. Opening up to the self isn’t about acquiring new beliefs - it’s stripping back the old ones.

Taking responsibility for me completely and how I choose to see, sense and be in this world has transformed this life of mine. Opening me up to things I didn’t even know I didn’t know, with a continuous space of questioning, where the dance with all of me, rather than the limited me, is now my experience. Does it take a bit of work? Yes. - Is it worth it? Yes, Yes, Yes.

Recently I found myself in a conversation with a gentleman who expressed how amazing and wonderful that I was ‘a survivor’ of sexual abuse. I smiled and shared - ‘beautiful man, I was experiencing a life of survival, I have now opened up to a larger life experience of liberation, freedom and love, this is no longer survival – this is living.’

Internal peace is personal power; we all just have to be curious about that for no other reason than – Why not?

This morning I did my usual morning swim, run and meditation. The next part of the ritual is always my morning coffee. There I was, catching up on life with the café owner and my morning paper when a man behind me started to talk to himself. People were walking past frowning and making every attempt to get as far away from him as possible. I sat and listened to the discussions he was having with himself – it went from his success as an athlete, to why he chose to have an ice cream instead of eggs for breakfast.

Paying attention to what he was saying out loud, I began to focus onthe discussions that were going on in my own mind. How often do I jump from one conversation to another? The only difference between him and I was that his thoughts were on loudspeaker for the world to hear.

No matter who we are, what job we have, where we were born, or how sane or insane we perceive ourselves to be, we are conversing with ourselves in this mind of ours, constantly.

And we take our thoughts very seriously and these thoughts create a full range of emotions that we experience as part of our day-to-day living. These thoughts create stories that end up playing as our own mini movies –it might be picturesof the fancy car we will be driving one day, or how the boy at the office is annoying us. These stories jump from one to the other in moments. Every thought that creates these stories; has a physical response, as though these thoughts were really happening to us in physical reality. This in turn effects how we experience, see and sense our immediate reality.

What a wake up for me to see how often I would run away and get lost in a story of my mind. These days I try and see it like my best entertainment. Seeing my words and thoughts as my own internal stand-up gig has not only exposed a less serious life and not always quality entertainment but the experience of starting to see what is rather than what was or might be.

In the past, I had been so consumed with my thoughts that I had no idea what was really in front of me. Today every time I see myself in an unproductive thought or thoughts that don't serve my life, I smile and do something to bring me back to the present moment. This is a practice, which took time, but has exposed me to a lot more of life.

I invite you to check out how often you get caught up with the conversations in your mind, just do it as a game. Question what the thoughts are doing to you? How long have you been in your thoughts? Are you fantasising about the future or from the past? Should of done, should do or any other fabulous movie in the making. Every time you catch yourself thinking, give yourself a smile and maybe remember the man in the coffee shop..

Learning to become present to what is in front of us and not what is in our heads is a practice of awareness. Choosing awareness is where our lives expand beyond the thoughts of desire, regret, pain and fear, where we can open up to our full creative potential. Why would we choose to live in the prison of our repetitive words and stories? We have the power of choice to do otherwise.

Practice tools to start watching your own mental stand up gig:

Watch yourself think. words, stories, images

When you see yourself caught in a story, squeeze your hand and use that as a tool to bring yourself present to the physical sensation in your body.

Sometimes you can be in story for quite sometime before you realise you are in it. Smile. You’re funny.

Ask yourself; do you believe your thoughts?

Are your thoughts of regret, desire, longing, or fantasy?

Breathe and become present to sensations in your body. Get present to your outside environment, look at the light in the trees or take your breath to your stomach.

While making our moves to the bedroom, thoughts about desires and expectations start running through our heads. You know how it goes, kissing quickly moves to the wondering of the hands – and you start to think,‘Damn, not too close to the fat rolls around my waist. Umm, are we moving too quickly? Oh shoot, my hands are clammy, I knew I should have worn the black lace underwear or the space of long term relationships going through the sequence we have seen many times before. ’We’ve all been there, the desire to be good enough, fear of not doing it right, dishes need to be done or quick I need to get some sleep, this internal chatter continues.

Every one of us knows what it’s like to be in distracting thought when getting intimate. We all have preconceived ideas about what it should look like, how it should be done, if its the right way, expectations about performance, all usually triggered by our own past experiences, beliefs and expectations. Whether its the limited conditioning around sex that has been passed down through our DNA or things we read in magazines, we all have limiting beliefs that restrict us from experiencing this very natural human experience in all its beauty.

Experiencing our intimate life completely is a practice. You see, we are so conditioned to think in our daily life that we have forgotten how to feel. We are so consumed by our thoughts that we are ignorant to the conversations our body is trying to have with us. Of course we are always connected to our body, however we haven’t been conscious of its conversations.

I had always perceived my intimate life as one that was ‘normal’ – sex a couple of times a week, I enjoyed the experience, I had fun in the process, and I looked forward to more of it and felt I was adventurous in my exploration. However, it wasn’t until I started to practice being present to my body, that my intimate life transformed to a world beyond the one I knew.

I had no idea how disconnected from my body I really was. On reflection, I could see that I was always thinking about what I should be doing next – ‘is he enjoying this? I should have done the washing. Should I move my body this way?’ Too often I would be thinking about where I was going and what I had to do to get there. Our personal experience of intimacy is often dictated by our personal experiences, families values and societies perceptions and beliefs of what is good and bad, right, wrong and acceptable. These attach fears expectations and reactions which restrict us from being with the experience of perceiving all that we are in those moments.

Becoming connected to my body and its conversations exposed my vulnerabilities, fears and more of myself to me. It exposed physical, emotional contractions held within the physical, that I didn't' even know existed. My personal history of abuse was still very stuck in this body of mine and I would react according to that. My ancestors beliefs of sexuality being wrong, built by shame, guilt and silence. These were unconscious reactions and ones that I didn't even know until opening up to my sensory body, moment by moment. This space of growth took place when I practiced presence in day to day living and the practice, transcending my intimate life, where freedom of expression, authentic behaviours and personal fulfilment are now my experience.

This is about getting to know the conversation that is happening for each of us on the inside. To start to be conscious of the self, completely, opens us to being aware of what we hold truthful to ourselves. This exposes an integration of all that we are and decisions and behaviours are respectful to the self in turn to the other. Too often we are making decisions based on expectations, desires, pictures of the future or reacting based on our experiences from our past.

When we practice presence in our daily life, we can then transfer it to our intimate life. We are then no longer present to our thoughts, we are present to the moment and there are no two moments that are the same. This is where our intuition, truth and full expression can come to life. This expression allows the complete self to shine beyond the extra kilo around the waist, our preconceived ideas of what the bedroom scene should look like, how fast we should move, or how we think it should feel.

This practice of presence is just that, a practice of awareness. To learn to play an instrument takes time and to become aware of our sensory body is no different. Being curious to be curious about presence without a destination might just expose a holiday you could never of dreamed of where the experience of all that we are can be exposed.
